Being a successful business means constantly monitoring what your competitors are doing and offering to compete in your market. While reviewing our competitors’ websites, I noticed an emerging theme. Many background check companies now say they are affiliated with the PBSA.
What is PBSA?
The PBSA is the Professional Background Screening Association. It is a non-profit trade association whose purpose is to help consumer reporting agencies (Background check companies, for example) provide reports that meet the standards and ethics in compliance with the FCRA (Fair Credit Reporting Act).
What Does it mean to be affiliated with PBSA?
A business can become affiliated with PBSA by paying a fee. Being affiliated means you support the purpose of PBSA. Human Resources and Attorneys may opt to be affiliated members of the PBSA. Typically, someone who is affiliated is not directly involved in producing a background check. Being affiliated is great for marketing opportunities and obtaining access to pertinent information regarding background checks.
What Does it mean to be Accredited by PBSA?
PBSA requires a company to pass an interim surveillance audit. During this audit, the company must show that it complies with all regulations and FCRA standards.
Why is it Important to Choose an Accredited Company?
If a company is PBSA-accredited, it signifies that it was audited and has proven that it complies with the necessary laws and guidelines to protect its clients and applicants. You can trust that they have measures to protect personal identifying information and provide factual reports. It shows they are dedicated to continuously educating themselves to comply with new laws.
When you are shopping around for a background-checking company, be sure to look for more than just the PBSA logo. Be sure “accredited” accompanies it. We have clients whose industries require their background-checking agency to be accredited. Can you imagine if they overlooked the tiny semantic of affiliated or accredited?
